Network (in)stability

Kenny

Lately we’ve been experiencing more and more problems with our FSD servers. This sadly leads to inconveniences towards the users in the form of network instability problems. Therefore Logistics and Software Development are teaming up to fight these problems and bring you all a better and more stable network.

Now, what action points are we taking?

First of all we are documenting each network instability that occurs. These reports include the root cause of the problem, the involved server and the impact to the user. Over time this approach should give us more valuable feedback on where the problems occur. For example, if one server is always experiencing hardware problems, than it is probably wiser to remove that server from the network.

As a result of this documenting we already found out that the FSD server software had a bug inside the product which caused crashes of the product on several of our servers. This problem is already investigated and we’re planning to roll out a test version of this fix to the network during the coming days. If the results are positive, the other network servers will be gradually updated too.

At the same time we are investigating possibilities for improving the FSD server software for better scaling.

Another point is that a meeting will be scheduled between Logistics and Software Development in order to optimize the network layout in such a way that problems are less frequent in occurance.

Lastly we have a system in place which monitors the FSD server network automatically. This way the people from Logistics are automatically informed of major server problems.
